Director-Grants & External Relations - Marie Stopes International Ethiopia


Job Description

Overall Responsibility
_________________________________________________________________________
To support the achievement of Country goals through grant fund mobilization and implementation, establishment of an effective working relationship with donors, and ensuring quality, accurate and timely reporting, Establish strong relationship with the external stake holders.
 
Specific Responsibilities
_________________________________________________________________________
1)       External Relations:
  • Development of communication strategies that support MSIE’s strategic goals.
  • Leading and strategizing MSI Ethiopia’s promotional and public relation..
  • Overseeing drafting and producing information packets (press kits, briefing papers, fact sheets, etc.) on MSIE’s activities by liaising with project and other program staff using desk top publishing;
  • Develop strategic guidance for MSIE’s public relations activities and provide systematic support to implementing units and the Country Director’s office;
  • Responsible for developing a yearly action plan for public relations activities;
  • Provide leadership in putting forth appropriate corporate messaging, recommendations; and information;
  • Oversee the production and dissemination of MSIE’s stories in mass media.
  • Participate and lead the organization in relevant national and international events that contribute to the promotion of MSIE’s corporate values;
  • Provide technical advice and support to different implementing units in the production of programmatic visibility works and PR-related activities;
  • Oversee the development and continuous updating of MSIE’s corporate website.

2)   Establish and manage partnerships with key stakeholders 
 
  • Ensure good relations are maintained with key stakeholders in country and abroad via MSI (London)
  • Ensure close institutional relationship with and government agencies is continuously strengthened and MSIE plays its complementary role in the achievement of national objectives set by the Federal Ministry of Health.. 
  • Maintaining and developing partnerships with related organizations and stakeholders (particularly government) in accordance with MSI Ethiopia’s strategy 
  • Take the lead in familiarizing stakeholders with new strategies and plans of the MSIE, using a variety of media;
  • Develop and maintain a data base of program/ project activities of the Country Office, timely updates, and facilitating access,
3)   Oversee the management of grant funded activities and the facilitation of their design, monitoring and evaluation. Develop framework for in-country and overseas grant fundraising:
  • Develop quality and attractive concept papers/ grant proposals in collaboration with  the Programmes and Operations Departments;
  • Develop and periodically update Country Resource Mobilization Strategy, which serves as a framework for fundraising and partnership building activities.
  • Ensure that MSIE complies with all obligations that it has committed to under grants and partnership agreements.
  • Ensure MSIE’s grant funding policies and procedures are properly adhered to during proposal development and submission.
  • Oversee and facilitating the writing of reports for donors and project partners.
  • Liaise with MSI (London) on all donor funded programmes/projects.
  • Ensure that all reports are submitted on time.
  • Plan, share and monitor reporting timelines.
  • Ensure that all the requirements for approved projects are complied with.
  • Communicate relevant information from donors with regard to the grants to Senior Management Team and other relevant teams.
  • Funding opportunities are explored and results communicated to the Senior Management Team and implementing units of MSIE
  • Ensure major changes to the originally agreed outputs or cost lines or any risk to reach approved projects outputs is timely communicated to the donor
  • Adequate off-the-shelf proposals/ concept papers facilitated for submitting to donors in the event of fund availability.
  • All relevant staff trained on corporate grant management systems, proposal development and report writing.
4)   Team Leadership and Development:
  • Provide overall leadership and direction to the Grant Management and External Relations (GMER) Team in ensuring the achievement of MSI Ethiopia’s mission and strategic objectives
  • Line managing the External Relations Manager, Grant Managers and other professional staff of the GMER Department.
  • Establishing the priorities and focus of the GMER Department.
  • Motivating, coaching, training and continuously setting and reviewing performance targets for the GMER Team.
  • Conducting annual performance reviews for the team members of the GMER department.

Job Requirements

Qualification and Experience

  • MA Degree in Management, Economics, Public Health, or related field and have at least 8 years directly relevant experience, possibly working in another international organization, NGOs/Multi-lateral or Bi-lateral Funding Organizations on similar positions.

 Additional Skills Attitudes and Attributes

  • Excellent commend of written and spoken English is essential
  • Understanding of basic financial management, and an ability to work with numbers,
  • Excellent computer skills, including Word, Excel , PowerPoint and Outlook
  • High level of interpersonal communication & negotiation skills
  • Strong work ethic and ability to meet deadlines
  • Understanding of the issues surrounding provision of reproductive health care services internationally understanding major policies/issues of large bilateral/multilateral donors
  • Strong working knowledge of business practices
  • Leadership skills – demonstrated ability to build effective teams
  • Advanced analytical and organizational skills
  • Proven strategic planning skills
  • Inspirational and persuasive
  • Collaborative approach to team working
  • Strong personal commitment to the goals of MSI and to put it into practice.
