Animal Health and Welfare Officer @ Donkey Sanctuary Ethiopia 
Job Summary
To work within the project’s strategy and as part of the project team, to ensure that sustainable quality animal health and welfare interventions are provided to donkey and mules owning/using communities; through competence based animal health professionals training (CBT), partnership with veterinary training institutions and directly working with groups of owners/users; maintain a high level of competence in clinical and other relevant skills.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide health care to sick donkeys and mules in the project areas as part of  a training package 
  • Provide [CBT] Competence Based Training for government animal health professionals in the project areas; and does the required structured follow-up.
  • Ensure all interventions are carried out with the highest code of welfare ethics 
  • Provide education to community representatives/groups as well as local development agents on appropriate  health care and management 
  • Develop action plans for provision of direct health care, training of professionals and community education 
  • Conducts animal based welfare  assessments and other assessments as required 
  • Identify donkey welfare priorities with communities at targeted sites, generate evidence and provide inputs for developing key messages for community education and training.
  • Proper documentation of program activities and provide reports on monthly basis in standard format.
  • Make a follow-up and develop case studies for a donkey or group of donkeys as the Donkey Sanctuary intervention continues to make a difference 
  • Continuous monitoring of interventions with systematic collection of data regularly from the field. 
  • Compile evidences and best practices in the health care improvement and other integrated activities of the project.
  • Take an active role in veterinary  student training in equine clinical medicine, animal welfare and during practical clinical placements with the project 
  • Take part in undertaking research  guiding and supporting student research attachments  
  • Take part in resource development for animal health trainings 
  • Ensure minimum welfare standards are met during handling and communicating with donkeys during veterinary procedures or trainings by staff or trainees
  • Work with government, relevant stakeholders at all levels and the community to establish a primary donkey health care system in target woredas.
  • Ensure proper utilization of veterinary inputs including requests, storage, recording, dispensing, and transfers to third party and usage at village level and compliances to government and organizational policy and procedures.

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Experience
DVM Degree from recognized university; knowledge and experience in equine health and welfare is preferred. Young energetic candidates are encouraged to apply.

Knowledge and skills required: 
  • Clinical diagnosis skills;  
  • Training and facilitation skill
  • Proficiency in English
  • Excellent communication and report writing skills 
  • Skills in Microsoft Office package and data analysis
  • Team work 
  • Passion for animal welfare and community service
  • Knowledge of community language is essential for the respective applications
