Title of Position: Interpreter
Position Grade: GS-1 (UN salary scale for GS Employees in Eth.)
Type of Appointment: Six months, hourly contract on-call basis, with possibility of extension
General: Under the overall guidance of the IOM SLO Head of Mission, and the direct supervision of Administrative Assistant in Migration Health Unit (MHU), the incumbent will assist in the processing of migration health assessment of migrants; the incumbent will provide verbal translation services at the IOM Migration Health Division premises in Addis Ababa Ethiopia.
In particular s/he will:
1. Translate correctly and accurately from English into one (or more, as an advantage), and vice versa, of the following languages (Somali/Dinka/ Nuer/Amharic/Tigrigna/Oromo, etc.) during information sessions, pre/ post test counselling, medical history obtaining, laboratory tests and procedures, and physical examination, as conducted by IOM medical staff, with the following considerations:
• Translator must translate to and from: the Physician to the applicant and applicant to the Physician, capturing the accurate meaning of information provided and needed to be passed on.
• Translator must be capable of clearly expressing the statements and messages of medical nature, including but not limited to: sexual intercourse, behaviour and parts; sexually transmitted diseases; use / abuse of substances, mental disorders, cardiovascular diseases signs and symptoms, neurological diseases signs and symptoms, etc.
• Translator must hold with utmost respect/confidentiality any information shared during physical examination. Failure to do so represents major breach of the code of conduct and standards IOM adheres to.
2. Able to assist with directing patient flow or minor messenger’s tasks, if and when requested by the direct supervisor or one of the Doctors, the Data Processing assistants, Medical admin, Chief Nurse, Laboratory Technicians or Receptionists in the IOM clinics.
3. Perform any other related duties as assigned by the direct supervisor.
Desirable Qualifications (Educational experience, competencies and language):-
1. College Diploma in communication, literature or related field of study,
2. Minimum of two years of work experience in interpretation,
3. Competencies - Good communication skills, flexibility to work above normal working hours, willingness to work under difficult and hardship conditions, ability to work harmoniously with colleagues and others, creates a respectful office environment free of harassment and retaliation and promotes the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA),
4. Good computer knowledge in MS Office packages is mandatory,
5. English and at least one of the following languages: Somali, Oromo, Amharic, Tigrigna, Dinka, Nuer, Arabic, Kirundi, French.
