VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT: INTERPRETER-ENGLISH

TheAfrican Union, established as a unique Pan African continental body, is chargedwith spearheading Africa’s rapid integration and sustainable development bypromoting unity, solidarity, cohesion and cooperation among the peoples ofAfrica and African States as well as developing a New Partnership Worldwide.Its Headquarters is located in Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia.

Inseeking to achieve this objective, the African Union intends to strengthen itscapacity to deliver, among others, the implementation of a new organizationalstructure and the filling of all vacant posts of Interpreter.

TheCommission of the African Union invites applicants who are citizens of MemberStates for a position in the Directorate of Conference Management andPublications (DCMP).


1.   Post:


Job Title:           Interpreter-English
Grade:                P4
Unit:                   Directorate of Conferences Management andPublications(DCMP)
Supervisor:      Director,DCMP
Duty Station:    (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) or any regional Office


2.   MajorDuties and Responsibilities:

  1. To interpret the spoken word from one AU language into English;

  1. To provide simultaneous or consecutive interpretation of statements at conferences, meetings, discussions etc;

  1. To perform other related duties that may be assigned.

3.   Qualifications and Experience Required:

A Masters University Degree Languages orLinguistics and an Interpreting qualification from a recognised InterpretationSchool. A higher qualification will be an added advantage.


4.   Professionalexperience required:
Candidatesmust have at least ten (10) years of progressively relevant working experiencein Interpretation

5.   OtherRelevant Skills:


-             Excellent interpersonal skills;
-             Excellent communication skills;
-             Ability to work under pressure;
-             A good knowledge of a third AU official language wouldbe an added advantage.

6.   LanguageRequirement:

 

Proficiency inone of the African Union working languages. Proficiency of one or several otherworking language(s) would be an added advantage.

7.   Tenureof Appointment:

 

Theappointment will be made on fixed term contract for a period of three (3)years, of which the first twelve months be consider as a probationary period.Thereafter, the contract will be for a period of two years renewable, subjectto satisfactory performance and deliverables.


8.  LeastRepresentative Countries:


Candidatesfrom the following least represented countries are encouraged to apply: Eritrea,Central African Republic, Cape Verde, Comoros, Congo (DRC), Djibouti,Equatorial Guinea, Liberia, Mauritania, Namibia, Sahrawi Arab Republic, SaoTomeand Principe, Seychelles and Somalia

10.       Remuneration:

 

Indicative basic salary of US$ 40,413.00per annum plus other related entitlements e.g. Post adjustment (46% ofbasic salary), Housing allowance 14,414.40per annum), education allowance (75% of tuition and other education relatedexpenses for every eligible dependent up to a maximum of US$7,800.00 per childper annum), etc for internationally recruited staff of the Commission.
